WitR on the Road Review: North Carolina: Chapel Hill Creamery’s Chocolate Lab & Looking Glass Creamery’s Hickory Grove

On th eroad for other biz this week. Unfortunately Reliable Cheese is closed Mondays. I dropped in at Southern Season which has a VERY well-curated selection of local, regional and international selections.

Always hunting for cheese local, I grabbed two small wedges of Looking Glass Creamery’s  Chocolate Lab, a washed-rind semi-soft cow’s milk rubbed in cocoa and stout. It imparts a mild chocolately flavor against an otherwise mild cheese. The chocolate lingers well beyond the taste of the cheese. It’s ripened for just a few weeks, bearing no funk or pungency you might expect from some washed rinds.

The second was Chapel Hill Creamery’s Hickory Grove, a Trappist-style wedge, a golden, semi-soft paste with a mild flavor not unlike a young cheddar.
