Eric Larson- Owner of Marion Street Cheese Market, Leaving the Biz

As I continue to explore the notion of my own shop, it’s always hard to read of another leaving. Make no doubt, food retail is hard, hard work. Kudos to Eric for making MSCM a star! Below is an excerpt from his farewell at Oakpark.com

The one thing we can all be assured of in life is that at some point, things change, including personal and career aspirations. I am announcing a change at Marion Street Cheese Market (MSCM).

I will be departing from MSCM as both an owner and an employee. This is a bittersweet decision but one that has come after a great deal of thought and consideration. I find myself wanting to spend more time with my toddler twins and assisting with their care and upbringing and to explore new opportunities in my professional life. My last day at MSCM will be Friday, May 18.

I began Marion Street Cheese Market as an idea I had on the Metra train riding into work one morning in May 2004. After a July 2004 trip to Switzerland and France, where I visited many cheese shops, it confirmed my decision to open a cheese shop of my own. It was a big decision to leave the work force and start up a small business. But I felt Oak Park would be the ideal place for the local, sustainable, artisan cheese market I had in mind. I regularly shopped at the Oak Park Farmers Market every Saturday and knew the customers of Oak Park and River Forest would be the type of people to support such a business. After a great deal of work over the next six months, my wife Michelle and I managed to open our doors that year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

I'm trying to keep a log of all the things we cook which taste really lovely. And it will also save a lot of time and bits of paper when it comes to sharing those recipes with friends.
