Five years ago owner Ken Monteleone dropped the corporate sales mantle and invested in his passion: artisan cheese. Today, the upper Midwest, and specifically Madison, WI, is blessed with one of the finer shops in the country.
I was fortunate last week to be at Fromagination for a little birthday celebration along with a shop full of excited regulars and three of the regions, and the country’s best cheesemakers:
- Marieke Penterman, maker of Marieke Gouda, the Gouda that Europeans are noticing and asking for
- Andy Hatch, maker of multi-award-winning Pleasant Ridge Reserve and Rush Creek Reserve
- Chris Roelli, responsible for the re-birth of Roelli Cheese as an artisan maker after a century of commodity cheese, maker of Dunbarton Blue, Red Rock and more great cheeses.
There were a couple one-of-a-kind cheeses on hand for sampling, and yes, I brought chunks and slabs back to review and share with you soon!
Ken and his staff run a beautiful shop with well-curated cheeses and many other products including crackers, honeys, jams, boards, books and utensils. Fromagination is located right on the capital square in the heart of Madison.
