Jazzing Up a Cheese Platter – WSJ.com

Looking for a good book to help you get into cheese? Try Laura’s Cheese Essentials. Meantime, Laura’s featured in the Wall Street Journal discussing how to wow your party with a better cheese board.

“Laura Werlin, the James Beard Award-winning author of five books on cheese, believes that when there are interesting cheeses at a party, the platter “often plays a starring role.”

“People want to know what they are—they want to taste them, they want to talk about them,” she says.

Whether she’s expecting six or 60 guests, she’ll offer the same number of cheese types—five to seven. “If you have too many types, it’s a feast for the eyes, but less so for the stomach because it’s confusing,” says Ms. Werlin. “Your guests are not going to remember one of them.”

  1. This is one of the things I really enjoy if we have friends joining us for a meal… to make a cheese board, and to make it look appealing. I think one secret is to have a big enough board so the cheeses can be displayed properly, even if there is only two of them! I never thought of putting figs out, I’ve used other fruit and things like celery, tomatoes, watercress… thanks for the idea!

Salutation Recipes

I'm trying to keep a log of all the things we cook which taste really lovely. You know what it's like: you tweak and tweak a recipe until it's barely recognisable and then wonder how you used to make it. And it will also save a lot of time and bits of paper when it comes to sharing those recipes with friends.
