Sunny Road Raw Cheddar

I’m always excited  to find new cheeses from here in Minnesota so I was eager to try Daniel Lemke’s raw cheddar from Morning Star Farm in Cokato. Unfortunately, it’s not a particularly interesting cheese.

Distributed in bricks much like commodity cheese, the flavor profile of Sunny Road has none of the characteristics of the best raw milk cheddars with English or US-made. There’s no depth, no minerality and no sharpness whatsoever. I applaud that it’s all natural and uses raw milk, but I find it no different in taste than typical commercial grocery bulk cheese.

If you like your cheese exceptionally mild, here is one for you that’s locally made and natural.

Cheese: Sunny Road Raw Cheddar

WhoMorning Star Farm

Where: Cokato, MN

Milk Type: cow (raw)

Texture: semi-firm

Rind: none/natural

Shape: brick

Tasting notes: mild to the point of bland

I'm trying to keep a log of all the things we cook which taste really lovely. And it will also save a lot of time and bits of paper when it comes to sharing those recipes with friends.
