The World’s First Deer Cheese

A big thanks to Master Cheesemaker, Master Cheese Grader and Master of Cheese, Neil Willman for bringing this to my attention. Deer milk cheese  is now a reality! You may recall this recent story. Well, these folks are already making it!

Follow the link below for a video of the finished product.

“A couple of questions immediately sprang to mind when a genial middle-aged chap casually approached me at a recent gathering and mentioned he was overseeing the production of deer cheese in New Zealand.

Firstly, had April Fool’s day come late this year?

And if not, was Ben Stiller’s bumbling protagonist of Meet the Parents fame, one Gaylord Focker, actually onto something? Can you really milk anything if you put your mind to it?

The genial man is Graeme Shaw, ex-manager of Queenstown’s exclusive Matakauri Lodge, and together with third-generation Maniototo elk farmer John Falconer and award-winning Waikato cheese maker Neil Willman, he’s answered that question emphatically in the positive.

In fact, he’s well on the way to establishing what’s believed to be the world’s first commercial deer cheese operation.

‘There is a perception that deer are just too difficult to manage…'”

  1. Happy to help make connections, prob easier my end in NZ. 🙂

  2. Suggest you interview Whitestone as well for a balanced blog. I’ve spoken to both Whitestone and the deer farmer providing milk for of Neil’s experiments. I’m a New Zealander wanting to buy the stuff for my customers, no one can supply yet regardless fo who was ‘first’.

  3. Guess you missed New Zealand’s Whitestone Cheese press release re their deer cheese a few months ahead of Neils? http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/straight-furrow/dairy/8553311/Deer-milk-cheese-may-be-a-world-first

I'm trying to keep a log of all the things we cook which taste really lovely.
